Edward "Ed" Gaydos, Jr. Obituary

Edward “Ed” Joseph Gaydos, Jr., 75, of Slaton, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.

Ed was born on May 29, 1948, in Slaton to Edward Joseph Gaydos Sr and Mary Wendel Gaydos, the oldest of 10 children. He graduated from Slaton High School in 1966. From the age of 15, Ed worked for his uncle, Jake Wendel, at Wendel’s TV and Appliance in Slaton, learning to be a TV and appliance repairman, and followed Jake when Jake purchased Radio Lab in Lubbock. Ed married the love of his life Patricia Davis on January 20, 1968, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton. Ed joined the Slaton Volunteer Fire Dept. in 1975 where he served prior to going to the Lubbock Fire Academy graduating in 1986. He was named fireman of the year in 1978. Upon graduation from the Lubbock Fire Academy, he went to work for the City of Slaton Fire Department as a full time paid fireman and retired in 2009. While working for the fire department at various times he served as assistant fire chief and training captain. He also was a member of the Slaton Lions Club for many years, where he served as secretary and was voted Lion of the Year, twice. Ed and Patricia were members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton.

Ed loved to fish and enjoyed going on annual trips to Lake Amistad with his brothers.  He also enjoyed playing Skip-Bo and dominoes with his family. Ed and his grandchildren loved to rake leaves and gather pecans out of the yard. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Janice Chancellor; and his brother, Alan Gaydos.

Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Debbie Turley of Lubbock, and Jennifer Green and her husband, Dustyn of Hamlin; his sisters, Mary Ann Worley of Slaton, Patsy Koontz and her husband, Wayne of Lake Brownwood, and Linda Lankford of Slaton; his brothers, Timmy Gaydos and his wife, Renie of Justiceburg, Tommy Gaydos, Mike Gaydos and Susie, and Mark Gaydos and his wife, Mary Jane, all of Slaton; and his grandchildren, Abigail Turley of North Lake, Gracee Townsend and her husband, Samuel of Abilene, and Joseph Green of Hamlin.

Viewing will be 4-6:00 pm with a visitation 5-6:00 pm Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Englunds Chapel, followed by a Prayer Vigil at 6:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am Monday, April 8, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton.  Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery in Slaton. Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

The family suggest memorials be made to Slaton Volunteer Fire Department, the West Texas ALS Support Group, or St. Joseph Catholic Church of Slaton.
