James “Straw” Gary, 91, of Slaton, passed away Friday, August 9, 2019.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, August 12, 2019 at Englunds Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery in Slaton. Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
James was born November 16, 1927 in Tahoka to Claude and Anna Gary. He attended school in Post and joined the U. S. Navy in 1945, serving in the South Pacific area until 1947. In 1952 he moved to Slaton and went to work for Santa Fe Railroad. He retired in 1987. James was also a 32nd degree Mason in Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge #1094 and a member of V. F. W. Post #6621.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma Joyce in 2018; his sisters, Bonnie Duran and Linda Gordon; his brother Billy Gary; and his granddaughter, Robbi Hasty.
James is survived by his daughters, Karen Hatley and husband, Danny of Lubbock, Cristi Smallwood and husband, Ronnie of Waller, and Brenda Greer and husband, David of Merkel; his sons, Dennis Gary of Round Rock, and Gary Cox and wife, Jane of San Angelo; his sister, Arleta Gary of Brownwood; 12 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
