Nelda Merrell

Nelda Ward Merrell passed away August 25, 2019.

Born March 9, 1926, to Ernest and Drucella Ward, Nelda enjoyed growing up with the fun of a large family and small town friends in Slaton, Texas.

She married the love of her life, Lowell Merrell, in 1944, and they began building their own family even as he served in WWII.

After Lowell’s service, they moved their family to Oklahoma City to continue their educations at the colleges available there, all the while expanding their family.

Nelda attended Southwestern Bible college where she enjoyed the Scriptural studies and musical ministries. She subsequently continued her educational efforts at Oklahoma City University, focusing on developing her musical talents, and earning highest academic recognitions and placements.

When Lowell joined the Oral Roberts Ministries in 1956 and the family moved to Tulsa, Nelda used her talents and skills in leading church choirs, church bible teachings, and Sunday School teachings.

She moved her family back to West Texas when her husband began managing a family business enterprise and continued her generous work supporting the development of others in church educational programs, Scriptural study groups, and musical activities.

Nelda’s life was always focused on serving her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, by giving and supporting others. The many lives touched by her life of service provided a source of love, support, and inspiration for all who know her in the many venues in which she enjoyed participation.

She is preceded in her journey to her forever home by her parents, three adoring brothers, and a devoted sister.

She is survived by her loving and faithful husband, Lowell, who held her hand continually as she bravely travelled the last leg of her journey home; three sons, John (Ruth), Barry (Edde), and Joe Bob; and two daughters, Judy and Kathy (Tony Ryser). Sixteen grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren honor her matriarchal love and devotion. A plethora of nieces and nephews will miss her laughter and loving spirit.

Services honoring Nelda’s life will be held at Englunds Funeral Chapel in Slaton, Texas, on Sunday, September 8 at 3:00 pm.  Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery, also in Slaton, Texas.
