Alfonso “Poncho” Solis Sr.,73, of Slaton, passed away on June 27,2024


Visitation will be at Englunds in Slaton on Sunday June 30th from 2:30 pm to 6:00 p.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 6:00 pm. A Celebration of life mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic church in Slaton on July 1, 2024, at 10 a.m. under the Direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.


Alfonso was born on October 30, 1950, in Slaton to Epimenio and Juanita Solis.


In 1967 he met Mary Helen Jimenez at El Capitan in Lubbock whilst dancing and enjoying their young lives. They got married on May 25, 1967. With the beginning of their new lives many adventures awaited. The biggest adventure of all would be the six kids that changed their lives forever. Everyone asked Poncho and Mary what made them fall in love.

Al “Poncho” Solis spent 47 years in the Automotive Paint and Body Industry. He managed multiple Body Shops in Lubbock and Slaton. He was a master artist that painted numerous show cars and personal vehicles. Many considered him the best in the business as he perfected ghost flames, woodgrain, pin striping, fades and other innovative techniques.  Al took great pride in his craft and went on to become a mentor to many.


Alfonso is preceded in death by his parents, Epimenio and Juanita Solis; and siblings, Pete Solis, Ruby Chepa Benavidez, Moma Benavidez, Tina Gonzales, Nina Ybarra, Mary Louise Ruiz, Mary Rita Garcia, and daughter Brenda Jimenez.


Alfonso is survived by his wife Mary Solis of Slaton; His children, Joe Jimenez (Yolanda Jimenez), Alfonso Solis Jr. (Vanesa Solis), Trine Jackson (William Jackson), Oscar Solis (Leticia Solis), and Juan Pablo “J.P.” Solis (Jessica Valdez); His grandkids, Joe Albert Jimenez, Marcos Jimenez, Julie Martinez, Breanna Boyer, Madasyn Solis, Aliana Solis, Jameson Jackson, Jazmyn Jackson, Thalia Solis, Luke Solis, Elijah Solis, Micheal Solis, Gabriel Solis, Allison Solis, Xavier Ramirez , Gabriella Ramirez, and great grandchild Aria Santos. He leaves behind a great number of compadres, Godchildren, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.


He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
