Alma Jean Kennedy Obituary
Alma Jean Winn Kennedy was born to Dan and Alma Winn on October 1, 1939 in Slaton, Texas. She passed away on October 22, 2025.
Alma spent her youth in Slaton and graduated from SHS, where she was involved in girls’ sports and several social clubs.
A few years after graduating, she met Ronnie Lee Kennedy from Post, and they were married in 1959. They were married for 65 years until his passing in April, 2025.
They had two daughters, Chris, born in 1961, and Anisa, born in 1967.
For many years, Alma Jean worked as a receptionist at Citizens State Bank, where she was known for her smile and friendly demeanor. She later worked for a local attorney, and then worked at Coldwater Creek women’s clothing store.
Alma Jean was a lifelong member of Slaton First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She also enjoyed being involved in several social and civic activities, including the Slaton Ladies’ Chamber of Commerce, the Athenians, the Slaton Art Club and the local ladies bridge club. If you knew Alma Jean, you knew that spending time with friends was high on her list of activities. She was known for loving to talk to anyone she happened to run into, and she cherished her time spent with the Ya-Ya Sisterhood that met weekly for years for coffee and snacks in various places around town.
Alma Jean was creative and artistic, and she enjoyed sewing, singing, and cooking. She had a lifelong love of makeup and cutting hair. She spent a lot of time as a young adult working with her mother in her beauty shop located behind their house. She also loved the mountains and enjoyed summer vacations in Ruidoso, NM with her family in her later adult years.
Alma Jean and Ronnie both loved all Slaton sporting events. They enjoyed attending their daughters’ sports activities when they were children, and they followed Chris’s basketball career at Wayland faithfully. In later years, two grandchildren, Kamryn and Braeden, came along, and many hours were spent watching them play basketball, football, softball and run track. If there was an athletic event happening, Alma Jean and Ronnie were there.
Alma Jean was a lifelong resident of Slaton. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of Library of Legacies in Slaton. She and Ronnie spent their last several months living there before their passing.
Alma Jean is preceded in death by Ronnie, who passed away in April 2025; her parents, Dan and Alma Winn; and her brother, Danny Mack Winn.
She is survived by daughters, Chris Kennedy; Anisa Gibbs and husband Reggie, and her two beloved grandchildren, Kamryn Gibbs and Braeden Gibbs; and the loving and cherished extended family and many friends in the Slaton community.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Library of Legacies and the many friends who have been part of Alma Jean and Ronnie’s lives.
Services to celebrate the lives of Alma Jean and Ronnie will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 10;00 am, at First Baptist Church of Slaton. Gravesides services will follow at Englewood Cemetery of Slaton. Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
