Alyce Mosser Obituary

Alyce Schakosky Mosser, 94 of Lubbock, and previously of Slaton, died on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13th, at Englunds Funeral Service in Slaton, Texas. Family visitation will follow. Celebration of Life Mass will be Tuesday, January 14th, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, also in Slaton. Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery in Slaton.

Alyce, the youngest of seven children, was born to Albert and Minnie Schakosky on June 16, 1930 in Hammer, South Dakota. The family lived on a homestead north of Nashua, Montana where wheat was the main crop and winters were fierce. Their large seven room house was built by Albert but did not have electricity or running water. Minnie melted snow in the winters for cooking and for washing clothes. The children attended school in a nearby one room school-house. At the age of 12, Alyce’s mother died suddenly and just 2 years later, her father also died.

After her mother’s death, Alyce was employed for her room and board by a neighbor. At the age of 15, she traveled alone by train to Lubbock, Texas to live with her sister Agnes Graves, and her husband John Graves, who was stationed at Reese Air Force Base. Alyce graduated from Frenship High School in Wolfforth in 1949. Her first job was as a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Hospital in Lubbock.

She met Hugo Mosser at the VFW in Slaton and began dating. They married April 21, 1951.  He was 30 and she was 20.  Hugo was a hard worker and a good provider. Their marriage was blessed with seven children.

In 1967, Alyce enrolled in LVN school and graduated top of her class.  She went to work at West Texas Hospital and then graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1975.  Her nursing career spanned several decades where she worked for Dr. Dan English, Dr. Sheperd, Dr. Travis Bridwell, as well as, working at Methodist Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. Alyce was a dedicated nurse and took pride in her work.

Alyce is preceded in death by her parents and 6 siblings: Melvin, Roy, Reuben, Mildred, Agnes, and Jim.

Hugo died on October 29, 2010 after 59 years of marriage.  People often told Hugo “you can’t take it with you” to which he would respond “no, but Alyce is going to bring it to me!”

In October 2022, after over 60 years at the same address in Slaton, Alyce moved to Lubbock and into a garden home built by her sons Steven and David. She greatly enjoyed her time in Lubbock. As her years increased, her health declined. The love for her children was manifested in the loving care each of her children returned to her. Having her children, and relatives, drop in to see her or coming to visit for several days was a true delight for her.

Alyce’s last six months found her in greater need for medical and personal care. Her Home Health Care nurses and assistants, Meals-on-Wheels volunteers, and Homebound Services of Christ the King Catholic Church were a blessing. Each of her children brought their talents and concerns to help made it possible for her to remain in her comfortable home. The love and attention of her children allowed Alyce to be safe and secure in her earthly home until she was called to her heavenly home.

Alyce is survived by her seven children: Carol King, Steven Mosser (Dolores), Annette Cook (Randy), David, and Johnny Mosser (Charlcie) all of Lubbock; Margie Harris (Terry) of Slaton; and Mary Edwards of Breckenridge, Tx.

Also left to mourn her passing are her grandchildren; Courtney Haylock, Chris Mosser, Kerry Mosser, Kim Gerlich, Kelly Mosser, Tyler Wimmer, Kelsey Cornwall, Tanner Fisher, Hannah Bullard, Tayla Johnson, Lyndyn Mosser, Tiffany Hancock, and Mishel Jeffcoat, as well as, 14 great-grandchildren.

Alyce will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Having grown up an orphan from the age of 14, Alyce always considered family a priority and blessing. Her children were her greatest accomplishment and joy.

Alyce was a long-time member of Catholic Daughters and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Slaton.  She was a dedicated Catholic and prayed the rosary nightly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels in Lubbock or Slaton.
