Obituary

Gladys Valeen Selma Hengst Moerbe was born to Oscar & Alma (Niemtschk) Hengst on February 14, 1935 in Thorndale, Texas. After 88 years, she left this earth to be with Jesus, our Savior, on May 15, 2023. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, May 18th from 6:00-7:30 pm at Englunds Funeral Home in Slaton, Texas. Funeral service will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2221 Avenue W, Lubbock, Texas on Friday, May 19th at 10:00 am with Rev. Eric Hiner officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Green Memorial Cemetery in Wilson, Texas. Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

Gladys was baptized March 17, 1935 and confirmed her Christian faith April 10, 1949 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale, Texas. On July 1, 1951 she married Kenneth Moerbe at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale, Texas. They moved from their home in Thorndale to the West Texas area in 1961. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Corlis Norman of Lubbock, Texas, Donna (Jim) Shepherd of Amarillo, Texas, Warren Moerbe of Wilson, Texas, Thomas (Resa) Moerbe of Arvada, Colorado and Angela (Roger) Beikmann of Victoria, Texas. She was predeceased by her husband in 1981 and is survived by their five children, a brother, Eldee Hengst of Thorndale, Texas, ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition to being a farmer’s wife and raising her children, Gladys proudly worked as a nurse, graduating from Methodist School for Registered Nurses in 1985. She was active in her Christian faith as a member at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lubbock, Texas for the past 40+ years. She was an avid quilter and loved to crochet, knit and solve word puzzles. Her favorite pastime was to host family gatherings in her home. Family and friends alike loved to get together at Granny’s house for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and Sunday lunches. She will truly be missed.

The family would like to express their most heartfelt appreciation to Hospice of the South Plains, especially Kelsey, Mary, David, Julie and Manuela for their expert and gentle care of our beloved mother and granny. In addition, the family would like to thank Ashley, Jan, Judy and Becky for your friendship and loving companionship during our mother’s last few weeks. We thank you all for helping us fulfill our mother’s last wishes to remain in her own home until her final day, surrounded by her family.

Memorials may be sent to The Lutheran Hour at give.lhm.org, Hospice of the South Plains, 4413 82nd Street #135, Lubbock, TX 79424 or Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2221 Avenue W, Lubbock, TX 79411.
