Gwendolyn Martin, 73, of Lubbock, passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024.
Viewing will be 11:00 am -6:00 pm Friday, March 8, 2024, at Englund's Chapel, followed by a visitation, 6:00-7:30 pm. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Church of Christ in Flomot, Texas. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Flomot. Arrangements are by Englund's Funeral Service of Slaton.
Gwendolyn was born on March 12, 1950, in Turkey, TX, to Lon and Cecil McKay. She grew up in Turkey and Quitaque, Texas. She married Eldon Martin on July 2, 1966, at the Quitaque Church of Christ and they moved to Canyon where Eldon worked in the swine industry. In 1967, they moved to West Virginia to continue working in the swine industry. While pregnant with her first child, she completed high school through correspondence from Happy High School in 1968. After her son, Chuck, was born, they moved back to Texas in 1968. While living in Canyon, TX, she had her second son, Kirk, in 1969. After returning to Quitaque, in 1973, she had her third child, Lori. Afterwards she returned to a life of working with livestock and ranching, also working at the Quitaque compress for a three-year period. Also, during this time, she completed her associate degree from Clarendon College and afterwards attended West Texas State University pursuing a bachelor's degree. In 1984, she and Eldon started Martin Railroad Construction, where she worked as a machine operator, and performed many other duties.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Junita Lane, Bonnie Geisler, Doris Davis, Theresa Gregory, and Gay Sperry; and her brothers, Gary Lynn McKay and Leroy (Bud) McKay.
Gwendolyn is survived by her husband, Eldon Martin; her sons, Chuck Martin and his wife, Kim of Lubbock, TX, Kirk Martin and his wife, Caren of Manvel, TX; her daughter, Lori Carter and her husband, Tony of Hutto; her sisters, Margie Purcell of Albuquerque, NM, Shorlette McKay of Amarillo, Devorah Justus, and her husband, Melvin of Slaton, and Renee Bearden and her husband, Kerry of Crowell; her brothers, Dwight McKay and his wife, Janet and Trent McKay and his wife, Sherri, all of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, M. D. Anderson Cancer Research in Houston, TX, Flomot Church of Christ, Memorial Park Cemetery in Flomot or a favorite charity.
