Joyce Powell, 96, of Lubbock, passed away on April 20, 2026.

Memorial Services will be at 10:30 am, Friday, May 8, 2026 at Englunds Chapel.  Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

Joyce was born on March 5, 1930 in Slaton to James and Mildred Hodge Smith. She was working as a telephone operator at the age of 18 when she met Glen Powell and they were married in 1948. At that point she stayed home and started raising their family. Working in the oil fields, his job took them to Montana, Ft. Stockton, Utah, and Wyoming.   She ended up back in Slaton in 1977 and worked for Eblen Pharmacy and C. R. Anthony’s.  She also worked as a cook at the Girl Scout Camp in Crosbyton.  She retired from the Slaton School District at the age of 75. Joyce loved doing embroidery, word search puzzles and reading.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her children, Debra Dewberry, Doyle Powell, Ricky Powell, and James Powell; her sisters, Winnie Pearl Luttrell and Judy Moczygemba; her grandchildren, Lee Ray Goins and Jamie Goins; and her great grandchild, Sammy Borges.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Diane Davids and Jody Carter and her husband, Terry, all of Lubbock; her sister, Avis Geer of Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
