James Earl Hammett

On May 12, 2022, James Earl Hammett of Katy, Texas, passed away at the age of 95.

Viewing will be during visitation from 10:00-11:00 am Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Englunds. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Englunds Chapel.  Interment will be at Englewood Cemetery in Slaton.  Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.

He was born March 26, 1927, in Slaton, Texas to, Ina and John Hammett.  He grew up in the Acuff community, attended Roosevelt High School and later Texas Tech University.  Earl served in the navy for over a year during World War II and later married Christine Kuykendall, November 14, 1946, in Roswell, New Mexico.  They lived in Dexter, New Mexico for six years before moving to Acuff, Texas, where they farmed for 35 years.  They then moved to Ransom Canyon, Texas, where they lived for 20 years. In 2005, they moved to Katy, Texas, to be near his son and his family.

Earl was raised on a farm and was a farmer all his life until his retirement in 1992.  Earl became a Christian at 10 years old and spent many years as a deacon and Sunday School teacher in the Baptist church.  He was on many civic boards including the Roosevelt School Board for 18 years and the Acuff Gin Board for 13 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Christine Hammett, his parents, John and Ina Hammett, and brother Paul Hammett.

Earl is survived by his son David Hammett and daughter-in-law, Janice Hammett of Katy; daughter, Rhonda Karpowecz of Rolla, Missouri; grandchildren, Eric Hammett of Austin, Ryan Hammett of Wichita Falls, Christy Nolingberg of Houston, Paige Tidwell of Murfreesboro Tennessee, and Collin Pleasant of Portland, Oregon; eight great-grandchildren; and niece, Brenda Sherrell of Jewett, Texas.
