James Cantley Stone, 97, of Sanderson, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

James was born on January 30, 1929 in Ft. Stockton, Texas to Charlie and Bessie Stone. He was self employed as an electrician and was the “greatest rancher of all time”. James led an interesting life as a trapper and hunter, hunting mountain lions, and other animals. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Trappers and Fur Hunters Association and the National Trappers Association and attended many conventions. He was also an antique dealer, owning his own store in Ft. Stockton. He and his wife, Wanda, traveled the world to find antiques for the store. James sang and played the fiddle in a band and served as County Commissioner for Culberson County for four years.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda; his son, Dayle Thomas Stone; and his sister, Doris Malm.
James is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Halfmann and her husband, Kenneth of Sanderson, Texas, and Cindy Sell of Sanderson; his grandchildren, Natasha Thomas and her husband, Shawn, Mitchell Sell, Heather Gordon, and Kenny Halfmann; his great- grandchildren, Brayden Ashmore, Hadley and Hope Gordon, and Chase and Travis Halfmann; and his nieces, Linda Smith and her husband, Tommy, and Katie McKenzie and her husband, Dean.
