Jose Chavarria, 90, of Slaton, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023 in his home surrounded by his wife, and family.
Viewing will be 12:00 am-6:00 pm Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Englunds, followed by a Rosary Service at 6:00 pm. Mass will be celebrated 10:30 am Monday, February 13, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton. Interment will follow at Englewood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton.
Jose was born on March 11, 1932 in Kerrville to Gonzalo and Genoveva Chavarria. He married Margarita Ruiz in 1955 and they celebrated 67 years of marriage. They raised their 6 children in Levelland. He spent most of his life self-employed, first as a sheep-shearer, then in agriculture, and finally selling and planting trees for more than 20 years when they lived in Fort Worth before making their move to Slaton. He loved to play his guitar and sing at family gatherings. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting his family from Brady. He knew no stranger and he was a humanitarian with a kind heart who helped any and everybody. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gonzalo Chavarria; and four sisters.
Jose is survived by his wife, Margarita; his daughters, Elena (Helen) Corrales of Burleson and Sandra Durazo of Arlington; his sons Eddie Chavarria and his wife, Cecilia of Midland, David Chavarria and his wife, Rosa of Slaton, and Daniel Chavarria of Slaton, and daughter-in-law Lydia Lebario (widow of Gonzalo) of Midland; sisters, Rita Turner of Lampasas, Stella Gonzales of Levelland, Delia Chavarria of Lubbock, and Vicinta Mendez of Levelland; his brothers, Frank Chavarria of Lubbock, and Augustine (Auggie) Chavarria of Lampasas; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
