Shirley Copeland Obituary

Shirley Marlene West Copeland departed this life to walk those streets of gold on May 29, 2025.

A Memorial Celebration will be hosted by the family on Saturday, June 7 at 11 am at Englunds Chapel in Slaton. (Casual dress…No grief).

She was born on August 28, 1935 in Parker County, Texas to L. H. and Fay West, where she grew up and graduated from Weatherford High School and Weatherford College.

She married R. G. Copeland in 1954 and they moved to Pettit, Texas in 1955 before eventually settling in Slaton in 1960 where they raised their family.  She had a career in government service beginning at Reese Air Force Base in the 1950s and later worked for several prominent attorneys before retirement.

Shirley was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she played the piano and organ for many years.  She read the Bible daily until she was unable to do so.

She was a very good and competitive golfer and enjoyed playing with family and friends.  Shirley also spent a lifetime supporting her kids’ and grandkids’ baseball, football, and basketball teams and whatever endeavors they chose.

Many summer evenings would find Shirley hosting cook-outs and volleyball, baseball or wiffle ball games in the Copeland backyard with very competitive family and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, R.G., and an infant daughter, Robin (1955), along with her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Left to remember and cherish the good times are her son, Kelly, and wife Kathy, of Slaton; son Barry, and wife Kim, of Lake Whitney; daughter Terri, and husband, Chris Greener, of Cochran County; grandchildren Regi, Angie, Brian, Crystal, Ryan, Sara, Kelsey and Kasey; 17 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. Along with a host of great friends.
