Walter was born on April 21, 1931 to John and Anna Denzer in Chicago, IL a few years after they immigrated from Winterberg, Germany through Ellis Island, NY. He was the fifth of five children. The family relocated to Slaton in 1935 when Walter was four years old.
He attended St. Joseph School in Slaton. He was drafted into the US Army in April 1951. He married Mary Jane Kubacak on November 25, 1952 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slaton. They were the first couple to marry in the newly constructed church. They had eight children. He was married 58 years to the love of his life until she went to be with the Lord in 2010. Walter was a loving husband and father. He knew and loved his Lord. He also knew how to work. He was long-time farmer and carpenter, and he spent many years doing both. He also knew how to make people smile and laugh. Everyone knew him for his sense of humor—he never missed a chance to tell a joke, share a story, or bring a smile to the room. He believed that laughter made hard days easier and good days better, and he lived that belief until the end. His hands showed the marks of a life well worked, and his words left behind countless memories filled with warmth and wit. Some of his last words were still those famous one-liners bringing a smile to everyone in the room. Second to making people laugh, he loved dancing, polka music, and the many trips to Oktoberfest across the state. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he helped with the sausage festivals and St. Joseph's School maintenance. He was dedicated to the Mercy Center in Slaton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Alphonse AA Denzer, sisters Ann Ehler and Nell Hlavaty, son Walter Lee Denzer, and two grandsons Christopher Denzer and Daryl Ross Douglass.
His survivors include his children; Judy Denzer, Rick Denzer, both of Slaton, Mary and husband Mike Beckham, Margie Douglass, Steve Denzer, Carl Denzer, all of Lubbock, and Jeff Denzer and wife Toni of Katy; along with 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Mercy Retreat Center, 605 s 19th st, Slaton, Texas 79364.
